Hospitality design is an exercise in exactitude. Whether it is a boutique hotel lobby, a subterranean wine bar, or a light-filled coastal restaurant, the atmosphere must be absolute. Every material specified must serve the overarching design intent.

Too often, the specification process for commercial timber becomes a series of concessions. Architects are presented with a fixed range and asked to find the closest match to their vision. The right quality rarely comes in the right finish. The right finish rarely comes in the right quality. Something always gives.

At Chêneoak, we do not believe in the “closest match.” We operate on a different premise: the world’s best oak can do anything.

Chêneoak is not a timber merchant selling off-the-shelf products we are an architectural partner supplying single-origin, old-growth French Oak. This is a material so consistent that it can be specified, smoked, and finished to realise any design intent.

The Limitation of Mixed-Batch Timber

The limitations of standard timber specification trace back to the forest — or rather, to many forests. Most commercial flooring is mixed-batch: timber drawn from different regions, different climates, and sometimes different countries, combined at a mill into a single product range. The result is a material that looks consistent in a showroom but behaves unpredictably on a project.

Because the soil, climate, and age of these trees vary wildly, the timber itself varies. When a designer attempts to apply a custom reactive stain or a specific hard wax oil tint to mixed-batch timber, the wood absorbs it unevenly. As a result, the floor ends up patchy and inconsistent. Ultimately, the result fights against the design intent rather than supporting it.

The Perfect Canvas: Single-Origin French Oak

Chêneoak removes this variable entirely. All of our timber is sourced exclusively from PEFC-certified, old-growth forests in France.

Because our French Oak is single-origin, it possesses a remarkably consistent density, tannin content, and natural blond tone. It is the ultimate architectural canvas. When we apply a project-specific finish — whether that is a deep, fumed smoking process for a moody restaurant, or a subtle, white-washed hard wax oil for a wellness retreat — the oak responds with absolute predictability.

The colour you approve on the sample is the exact colour that will be delivered across 500 square metres of commercial flooring.

Partnering to Realise the Vision

Our role is to remove material constraints. When a hospitality designer brings us a mood board, a material palette, or a specific atmospheric brief, we work collaboratively to develop the exact finish required.

Chêneoak specifies the entire space, not just the floor. Wide boards, structural beams, wall cladding, stair treads, and solid boules — all drawn from the same old-growth French forests, all finished to the exact same project specification. The result is total material consistency across every surface. No mismatched tones. No compromises between products. One origin, one finish, one space.

For projects requiring the highest standards of indoor air quality, we also offer our ‘Clair’ finish — a VOC-free, natural hard wax oil that protects the timber while maintaining its tactile, raw appearance.

Commercial Durability Meets Bespoke Design

Hospitality floors are not residential floors. They endure continuous foot traffic, luggage, spills, and the demands of a commercial operation that never stops. The finish must be equal to that reality.

Polyurethane does not meet this standard. It sits on the surface of the wood, and when it fails — and it will fail — the entire floor must be sanded back and recoated. Hard wax oil works differently. It penetrates the oak, protecting it from within, and allows any damaged section to be spot-repaired and re-oiled by maintenance staff without disrupting the venue. There is no full-floor shutdown. No extended closure. The floor simply continues.

Coupled with the inherent density and hardness of old-growth French Oak, this ensures the floor will not just survive a commercial environment. Instead, it will age gracefully within it.
