The Story Behind Cheneoak's Signature French Oak Timber Floors
70 years of family passion
CHENEOAK ORIGINS
Situated in the east-central part of France, the historic region Burgundy holds a prestigious reputation, particularly due to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This acknowledgment reflects the region's long-standing history of viticulture that spans centuries, coupled with the remarkable diversity found within its winegrowing terroir.
The landscape is beautifully characterised by its gentle rolling plains, adorned with vineyards of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which together symbolise the rich history and elegance that Burgundy is known for.
In addition to its wine heritage, this region is equally celebrated for its dedication to the sustainable management of its cherished forests, a vital aspect of its identity.
It is within this context that a significant partnership was formed ten years ago between Cheneoak and a local family sawmill, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration where our French Oak Floorboards originate.

CENTURIES OLD LUXURY
a lesson in quality
France is renowned for its long-standing and respected tradition of tree preservation and, which has been cultivated over centuries.
In the year 1670, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who held the position of Minister of Finances during the reign of King Louis XIV, took a significant step in establishing the forests located in Burgundy, France, marking a pivotal moment in the country's forestry history.
The management of French forests dates back to the 12th century, and these forests are celebrated for producing the highest quality oak in the world.
Unlike many other countries that simply cut down the available oak resources without a focus on sustainability, France has prioritised the cultivation and careful management of its oak trees.
By sourcing our oak from this single origin, we are able to guarantee not only the consistency of our products but also the superior quality of the milled items we produce.
Cheneoak's commitment to excellence is a direct result of the rich heritage and sustainable practices established in French forestry.

THE PIERRE FAMILY MILL
Keeping over 250 years of forest preservation alive
To the locals of Burgundy and the French Oak lumber community, John Pierre is a household name.

Why? Because John and his family – in collaboration with other local mills and the NFO (National Forests Office) – have dedicated their lives to the ethical cultivation and preservation of 200+ year old French Oak logs. In fact, they’ve been doing it for over 70 years.

In the past, French Oak was carefully selected by highly skilled woodsmen. The timber was painstakingly cut down and milled by hand, then left to dry in a clean, cool, and shady place for several years – stacked on raised foundations, without exposure to artificial heat – until sold. Simply put, it was travail acharné! (Hard work!)

Today, the local sawmill is operated by John’s granddaughter, Laura. Yet, despite advancements in technology, some proven practices remain. For instance, the French Oak is both air dried and kiln dried then stored in a humidity-controlled warehouse until sold.
Making our French oak floorboards some of the best quality not only Australia but the world.

Some old habits never die.
